Geography.
It occupies the north-western sector of the island, with a surface area of 23,65 Km 2 , at an altitude of 480 m and at a road distance of 70 Km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Its population of 3 198 is dispersed about the region and has suffered a strong emigration throughout history, specially towards Venezuela.
The acute slope is the most notable topographic characteristic. The altitude differences between the higher and lower sectors are solved within a short space. This makes adaptation to the adverse conditions the uneven terrain imposes, a key factor for cultivating land parcels and buildings.
